“Let’s Make Every Day Count”: Ky’Rell’s Graduation Story

For Class of 2026 graduate Ky’Rell, graduation is a moment to celebrate how far he and his classmates have come while also remembering not to rush through what comes next. Looking back on childhood, middle school, and even the challenges of living through a global pandemic, Ky’Rell reflects on how quickly time passes and encourages his classmates to appreciate the moments that make up their lives along the way.

Graduation Speech by Ky’Rell, Class of 2026

Good afternoon, everyone. I'd like to start off by thanking everyone for coming, and I would like to thank the Success staff for giving me this opportunity to be up here.

For those who don't know, I'm Ky’Rell, and of course I am giving this speech. I'm proud of everyone in this room. We made it. We all came this far, even after what felt like a lifetime.

I remember being in middle school looking up at the eighth graders, thinking they were so cool and intimidating. Or being on the playground chasing your crush around. Man, what I would give to be able to go back.

We always wanted to be in the future, like, “I can't wait to graduate.” Now, looking back, I wish I were that little kid again, worrying about finding a sharp pencil or getting my clip moved down. Now we have to actually worry about the world, like getting jobs, paying bills, and even doing taxes.

Honestly, I'm still scared because time never stops, and it can easily slip away from us. But look at what we already persevered through. We survived a global pandemic, playing video games, doing more online work, or faking it. Even though there was still fear, we made it through all of that to get to this moment.

And I just now finally realized that I shouldn't be in such a rush to grow up. It reminded me of a movie I'd seen. Recently, I watched a movie about this guy skipping the boring parts of his life, and he missed everything that was actually special.

Now, here today, I see that we shouldn't be in such a hurry to get to the next part that we forget to appreciate the little moments in life.

Let’s promise not to fast-forward through our lives.
