"You Made Me Feel Heard”: Layla’s Graduation Story
For this Class of 2026 graduate, reaching graduation represents more than completing classes and earning a diploma. It is also the story of finding a place where they felt safe, welcomed, and heard. After struggling in a previous school environment, Layla found a different experience at the Flint Success Center, where encouragement from family, teachers, and staff helped turn difficult days into a milestone worth celebrating.
Graduation Speech by Layla , Class of 2026 – Flint Center
Good evening, everyone—family, friends, teachers, and my fellow graduates. Standing here today feels a little surreal. Not because I didn’t expect to graduate, but because of everything that it took to get here: the early mornings, the late nights, the stress before tests, and the moments that felt like they would never end—but they did.
We started high school trying to understand how the world works. But along the way, we all have grown, learning not just from textbooks and teachers but also from each other, in both good and bad times. We learned how to fail and try again, how to support our friends, and how to keep going, even when things felt overwhelming. There were times when we doubted ourselves and questioned our abilities, but here we are. This means something. It means we’re stronger than we thought and more capable than we believed.
Today isn’t just about celebrating what we’ve accomplished; it’s about recognizing who we’ve become. Each of us has a different story, a different path, and a different future ahead. Always remember to stay true to yourself. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do something, because you can! Like my mom says: “You can do anything you put your mind to.” We have put our minds to graduating high school, but there is more to explore.
I want to thank my parents for staying by my side and always helping me through the good and the bad days. Trust me, there were some pretty ugly days. They are the reason I am standing here today on this very stage. I am very grateful for my parents because they have given me everything they didn’t have as kids, and that means a lot to me.
They have always told me to dream big, not to let anyone get in the way of it, and to always be true to myself. That is what I will forever do. I give kudos to you both, not only for teaching me what’s right and wrong, but also for giving me advice that I will use for anyone and everyone who thinks they can’t do something.
I also want to mention a poem that I learned from my dad. The poem is “Footprints in the Sand” by Mary Stevenson. This poem changed my way of seeing things, and I will never forget it. Thank you for teaching me this, Dad. Thank you both for teaching me throughout my life and for helping me through everything I needed. I love you both so much.
To the Success staff: Thank you for helping me through all of my classes and cheering me on when I earned a spin on the prize wheel for finishing a class. I appreciate every single one of you! The Success Learning Center and the Success staff really have changed my life!
Before I enrolled in online schooling, I was having a rough time in public school. My last school never listened to me. I never felt heard or seen. But even as I walked into the Flint Success Center for the first time to enroll, Coach Darr opened the door and made me feel comfortable right off the bat and welcomed me into the center.
All of you made me feel safe and welcome, like you were accepting a new family member into your brightly filled home. It was magical! So thank you for accepting me for who I am and making me feel heard.
To the Class of 2026: We made it! CONGRATULATIONS!
Finding Your Way at Success
Layla’s story shows what a difference it can make when a student finds a learning environment where they feel heard, accepted, and encouraged. At Success Virtual Learning Centers of Michigan, education is about more than completing coursework. It is about building relationships, creating a path that works for each student, and helping them recognize what they are capable of achieving. For LayLa, the Flint Success Center became a place to feel welcome, keep moving forward, and ultimately celebrate a goal that once may have felt far away.
