  • Staff of the Month: December — Jenny Nguyen

Success Virtual Learning Centers of Michigan is excited to recognize Jenny Nguyen, Executive Administrative Assistant, as our December Staff of the Month. If you’ve ever wondered how so much gets done so smoothly across our organization, chances are Jenny had a hand in it. She calls her day “organized chaos—in the best way,” and it fits: she’s answering questions, supporting staff, updating systems, solving problems, and keeping essential operations moving behind the scenes. No two days look the same, and Jenny thrives on that energy. At the heart of Jenny’s work is a simple, powerful goal: help people do their best work. She’s the person you reach out to when a process is confusing, when you need the right resource fast, or when a new tool could make a daily task easier. Jenny enjoys being that “go-to” support and approaches challenges like puzzles to be solved—diagnosing what isn’t working, fixing it, and clearing the way so center teams can focus on students. That mindset shows up in how she communicates, too. Whether she’s writing step-by-step guides, clarifying a new workflow, or answering a flurry of emails, she believes clear, approachable communication saves time and builds trust across the organization. Her influence is especially visible in onboarding new team members. Jenny remembers what it feels like to be new, so she aims to be the friendly, dependable presence that helps people feel supported from day one. She builds resources, checks in proactively, and creates a welcoming experience that reflects our culture. Ask what she’s most proud of and she’ll point to the tools and systems she’s helped build—especially the ones that save staff time or reduce confusion. If you’ve ever said, “Wow, this makes things so much easier,” Jenny considers that a win. How does she keep so many plates spinning? Systems upon systems—color-coding, lists, reminders, and (by her own admission) “maybe one too many spreadsheets.” If something can be automated, she’s on it. Those small, thoughtful efficiencies compound into a big impact: fewer bottlenecks, more clarity, and a steadier day for everyone else. Her philosophy for a positive workplace is just as practical—kindness and consistency—because reliability and patience create a ripple effect throughout the team. Outside of work, Jenny recharges with creativity and tech. She loves starting imaginative projects (even if a few remain delightfully unfinished), and she builds video games for fun—drawn to the thrill of seeing ideas come to life in code. When it’s time to fully unplug, she picks up a controller and plays. Looking ahead, Jenny is excited to expand the AI-driven tools and systems that help staff work smarter. It’s a natural next step for someone who blends problem-solving with empathy and who measures success by the time and confidence she gives back to others. Please join us in celebrating Jenny Nguyen, our December Staff of the Month—an operational linchpin, a generous teammate, and a quiet force for good at Success.

  • Finding Your Way: Mona’s Story of Resilience and a Second Chance

At Success Virtual Learning Centers of Michigan, every graduation represents more than academic achievement—it represents perseverance, courage, and the belief that students can write a new chapter for themselves, no matter their circumstances. For many, Success is the second chance that makes all the difference. During the Muskegon Center’s 2025 graduation ceremony, graduate Mona Cook shared her powerful story. Her journey is a reminder that while the path may not always be easy, with support and determination, success is possible. Graduation Speech by Mona Cook, Class of 2025 – Muskegon Center My name is Mona Cook. I was given the opportunity to share my academic journey and what Success Virtual Learning has done for me. Unfortunately, my childhood wasn't always pleasant or easy, often making school a challenge. My parents were addicts, so my childhood was full of moving, fighting, and losing things – such as objects and hope, and uncertainty. I went to in-person school until I was sixteen. I became hurt and angry and unfortunately, I made some bad decisions and it resulted in me getting expelled from my school. I was devastated and felt like my life would go nowhere. Shortly after, I heard about Success Virtual Learning through my boyfriend. I repeatedly asked my parents to enroll me into the school but had no luck, so I waited until I turned eighteen and could enroll myself. Success Virtual Learning wasn't overwhelming. I received a lot of support and encouragement, and I was finally able to achieve my goal of getting to graduate. I worked hard not only in school but also to better myself. Success Virtual Learning gave me the second chance that I needed, and I will always be grateful for that. I want to thank the staff for their endless support, guidance, and encouragement. I'd like to thank my parents for getting clean and bettering themselves. And I'd like to thank my boyfriend and the family members who stood by me and motivated me to achieve this goal. We all have worked so hard to get to this milestone and should all be proud. So, congratulations to the class of 2025! Thank you. Finding Your Way at Success Mona’s story shows the heart of what Success is all about: providing students with the chance to reclaim their education and future. Her resilience and determination, paired with the support she found at the Muskegon Center, led her to this milestone moment. At Success, students discover that no matter their starting point, they can “find their way” toward graduation, future opportunities, and a life filled with hope. Mona’s journey is proof that with the right support, new beginnings are always possible.

  • Staff of the Month: October — Allison Couturier

If you’ve visited our Lansing centers, there’s a good chance you’ve seen Relationship Manager Allison Couturier moving between tables, checking in with students, and offering a mix of practical help and genuine encouragement. Allison manages a growing caseload of 52 students—tracking attendance during activities, problem-solving day to day challenges, and, just as importantly, making time to listen. “If you take the time to listen, students are more willing to express themselves,” she says. That simple, steady approach has made her a trusted adult for many learners who need both structure and a safe place to be heard. Allison joined Success in January 2024 and, in less than two years, has become a go-to for questions big and small. As her role has evolved, she’s leaned into learning the ins and outs of our systems so she can answer “almost all of the questions that anyone has.” That willingness to keep learning—right alongside students—is part of what sets her apart. Ask Allison what she’s most proud of and she doesn’t list a project or a metric. She talks about trust. Building trust with students, she says, is the accomplishment that matters most. It shows up in small moments: a student circling back to share good news, another asking for advice, a third staying a few extra minutes to finish what they started. Those moments add up to progress. They’re also why, when colleagues nominated her for Staff of the Month, Allison was genuinely surprised. “There are a lot of staff members who are worthy of this,” she says. “I’m very grateful to be chosen.” Outside of work, Allison keeps a full, fun slate: you’ll find her on the volleyball court, getting in a workout, with a good book in hand, or out hunting when the season’s right. And here’s a bit of personality her coworkers may not know—she’s a champion napper who can “fall asleep whenever, wherever.” Consider it an elite superpower for someone who gives so much energy to others all day. For new team members, Allison’s advice is refreshingly straightforward: be yourself. Students can tell when adults are authentic, and that honesty creates the space for them to be themselves too. It’s a reminder that great student support doesn’t require a script; it requires consistency, care, and real relationships. Allison, thank you for the way you show up—for listening first, for earning trust, and for helping students take the next right step. Your steadiness makes a difference every day, and we’re proud to celebrate you as our October Staff of the Month.

  • Staff of the Month (September): Rebecca “Becky” Klupp

Success Virtual Learning Centers is proud to celebrate Rebecca “Becky” Klupp, Special Education Teacher, as our September Staff of the Month. Becky joined Success in 2017 and has been a steady, positive force ever since. In her role, she provides individualized instruction for students with IEPs, collaborates with general education teachers, and creates the tools and systems that make learning more accessible for every student. She’s known for pitching in wherever she’s needed—building resources, sharing materials, and offering support to teammates across centers. This year, Becky is also serving on the MTSS Development Team, adding a special education lens to the planning and implementation that guide our day-to-day work. That participation reflects her larger approach: keep students engaged online and at the centers, rely on teamwork, and look for practical solutions that remove barriers to learning. Colleagues describe Becky as dependable, detail-oriented, and generous with her time. She’s the person who quietly fills gaps—organizing shared notes, fine-tuning processes, and checking in on both students and staff. Those small, consistent actions add up to a big impact. Whether she’s helping a student meet an IEP goal or helping a teammate problem-solve, Becky models what it means to show up for others. Becky says her proudest accomplishment at Success is the relationships she has built. She wants coworkers to know they can come to her for help, ideas, or just a listening ear. That mindset is informed by her own family experience; she credits her husband’s perseverance—and the insights she’s gained from supporting someone with learning disabilities—with shaping how she advocates for students. Outside of work, Becky’s life is full of family and creativity. Much of her free time is happily spent cheering for kids’ sports, robotics, and dance, or playing board games and cards with her grandkids. When she finds a quiet moment, you’ll likely catch her crafting—scrapbooking, card-making, and diamond art are favorite ways to unwind. She’s also a “no coffee, no tea” person; hot chocolate or a Cherry Coke is her go-to. And when it’s time to focus, she turns up the music—anything from Jelly Roll and Reba McEntire to The Beatles and Salt-N-Pepa—to tune out distractions and get things done. Looking ahead, Becky’s personal goal is to be more present and less tied to technology—a simple idea that echoes the care and attention she brings to her students every day. Please join us in congratulating Rebecca Klupp, our September Staff of the Month. Becky, thank you for your leadership, your steady support, and the heart you bring to Success Virtual Learning Centers. We’re grateful for all you do for our students and our team!

  • Finding Your Way: A Muskegon Graduate’s Story of Gratitude and Growth

At Success Virtual Learning Centers of Michigan, graduation is about more than receiving a diploma—it’s about celebrating the strength, determination, and relationships that help students reach this milestone. Many Success students have faced obstacles in life and education, but through perseverance and support, they achieve something extraordinary: walking across the stage as graduates. At the Muskegon Center, 2025 graduate Jonathan Gokey shared his reflections during the ceremony. His words highlight the impact of caring teachers, the importance of community, and the value of hard work in achieving his goals. Jonathan Gokey, 2025 Graduate Graduation Speech by Jonathan Gokey Class of 2025 – Muskegon Center I don't know how I plan on going about this. First of all, I need to thank Ms. Vanessa, Mr. B, and Mr. Keenan – even though he isn't at the north building anymore. He was an amazing teacher and example setter for all of the students going to the north building. This school has provided me with the necessary equipment, tools and friendship to become better as a student as well as a person. I plan to help others come to this school and to encourage other students to do the same throughout the years. I want students to become better as I have through this school and I recommend this school to any students looking for a teacher-student friendship. These ladies and gentlemen are why I have been able to graduate and get to where I am now and I thank them for that. My idea here is to encourage other students to focus on their work more than messing around in class so that they too can also graduate. I must say, I have to give props to Vanessa and Chris. They helped me throughout the year – even off school hours. They would help me with my work if I asked. These teachers care about their students and you don't see a lot of that in other schools. I am thankful that these people have taught me and helped me learn in a way that allowed me to graduate through the 2 years I spent at this building. Now I have been able to sign up for college/university and plan on going next year. I'll be all set thanks to these wonderful teachers. Now that being said, I want to finish this up by saying thanks to the school administrators, staff, and students for allowing me to come into the school and be a part of their community. I greatly appreciate all that you have done for me and I thank you guys for the fun times we had. I hope y’all have an amazing day and thank you for the moment to have this speech.   Finding Your Way at Success Jonathan’s journey shows how Success provides more than just academics—it builds lasting relationships, personal growth, and confidence for the future. His gratitude for teachers who went above and beyond reflects the kind of support that sets Success apart. At Success Virtual Learning Centers, students are encouraged to take ownership of their education, focus on their goals, and prepare for life after graduation. Whether the next step is college, career, or a new opportunity, Success helps each student “find their way” and realize their dreams.

  • Finding Your Way: A Graduate’s Story of Strength and Success

Graduation is more than a ceremony—it’s a milestone that marks resilience, growth, and the power of perseverance. At Success Virtual Learning Centers of Michigan, we know that every diploma represents a story of overcoming challenges, pushing through difficult seasons, and discovering new possibilities. For many students, the journey to graduation hasn’t been traditional or easy. Yet with the flexibility, support, and encouragement found at Success, they are able to rise above life’s circumstances and accomplish something extraordinary: earning their diploma and stepping into their future with confidence. One of those powerful stories comes from the Monroe Center, where 2025 graduate Jenna Benitez shared her personal journey during the graduation ceremony. Her words reflect not only her own determination, but also the heart of what it means to “find your way” at Success. Jenna Benitez, 2025 Graduate Graduation Speech by Jenna Benitez, Class of 2025 – Monroe Center Good evening, everyone, First, I want to say congratulations to all of us graduating today. We did it. It hasn’t been easy—this journey took hard work, sacrifice, and a lot of growth. But if I could make it here, so can you. And today, we all proved that. When I started 9th grade, my life took a turn I wasn’t ready for. I had to go online because my family and I were going through a painful loss. We lost someone incredibly close to me—my Aunt Ruby. She wasn’t just family. She was my world. Her love, her support, and her presence meant everything to me. Losing her broke me in a way I didn’t know was possible. There were moments I wanted to give up. I really did. Dropping out felt like the only option. But I’m thankful for the people at Success who helped change my perspective, who worked with me, who believed in me when I couldn’t see the finish line. And now—look at me. I’m here. I’m standing on this stage, graduating. I wish Aunt Ruby could be here to see this moment. I know she’d be in the front row, cheering me on louder than anyone. But I’m also so grateful for the rest of my family, who are here with me today. Your support has meant everything. I’m truly blessed. Thank you to my teachers, mentors, and this school for not just teaching me subjects, but showing me strength and hope. I promise I’m going to make the most out of what I’ve learned here. And to everyone who never doubted me, who walked beside me on this journey, thank you from the bottom of my heart. We did it. Finding Your Way at Success Jenna’s story is one of many that show how Success is changing lives. Every graduate has a unique path, and at SVLCM, students are given the opportunity to take that path with personalized support, flexibility, and encouragement. At Success, we believe every student deserves the chance to realize their goals, pursue their dreams, and create a future filled with opportunity. Like Jenna, you too can find your way here—no matter where your journey begins.

  • Gaming for Graduation: Success Virtual Learning Centers' Esports Champion

At Success Virtual Learning Centers, success comes in many forms—academic achievements, personal growth, and, in this case, a state championship in esports. Logan, a four-year Success student, recently claimed the Michigan High School Esports League’s state title in Madden, marking a historic win for both Logan and the program. Competing against 43 schools statewide, Logan's journey through a nine-week season, culminating in playoffs, is a testament to his dedication. Practices, held twice weekly, covered everything from game updates to strategies for countering opponents’ playbooks. "We spent hours analyzing defenses and perfecting strategies," Logan shared. "Sticking with the Detroit Lions as my team most of the season was the right call—it felt like home turf." This win isn’t just about gaming—it’s about growth, collaboration, and the unique opportunities Success provides. Unlike traditional schools, Success offers flexibility that allows students to balance academics, passions, and responsibilities. For Logan, that balance also meant time to help his family renovate their home while excelling at school and esports. "Our center feels like a community," Logan said. "The connection with teachers is different here—it’s closer and more personal, which really helps when you're juggling different priorities." Looking ahead, Logan plans to enter the trades as an electrician, but his time at Success and his esports achievements will always be a part of his story. The center’s esports coordinator, Zachary Stacks, highlighted how esports teaches valuable skills like teamwork, problem-solving, and motivation. "These students inspire me daily. They’ve built discipline and camaraderie while excelling academically." The esports program at Success benefits from more than just dedicated students—it thrives on the support of staff like Stacks. “Esports here started as a club and grew into something much bigger,” Stacks said. “It’s incredible to watch students like Logan not only excel in the game but also use it as a motivator for academics and personal growth. We’re helping them develop problem-solving skills, discipline, and a sense of responsibility.” Success Virtual Learning Centers’ esports program continues to grow, with plans to expand into NBA 2K and revive its Smash Brothers team, all requiring different tactics and strategies for a winning edge. For Logan and his peers, the program isn’t just about competition—it’s about building skills for life.
